Let's Play Bubsy 2 - No Puns in this Game's Title [1 of 3]
66The sequel to Bubsy has some good ideas, but everything else about it is worse and it is a drastically worse game overall.
I've lodged my list of good and bad ideas below:
Good changes:
+ Health is now 3 instead of 1, and heals are plentiful
+ Bonus events are actual mini-games. Two of them kind of suck but whatever.
+ A store exists and you can sell collected stuff, ensuring you always have extra lives.
+ Stage select system is in place
+ Items to use exist, and some of them are reasonably useful. You could sell a bunch of lives and afford to screenwipe enemies.
Bad changes:
- Stages are crafted in a baffling, maze-like manner, often with no idea what direction is progress.
- Stages are also very large. This makes the game a chore to navigate.
- Open environments, like those in Bubsy 1, simply do not exist any more. You never have much freedom to move.
- SHMUP sections were added, as both sub-levels and as entire stages. They are extremely not good.
- Many new obstacles are hard to see and cause instant death, despite the health system.
- It is hard to tell these threats apart from background, or identify them as threats, especially in the SHMUP level.
- Boss fights are somehow even worse. Most of them are just 'beat these 5 enemies who hide and shoot'
- Switches and teleport doors are heavily employed to unlock progress in an annoying way. Worse yet, some are hard to see and have wonky hitboxes.
- Enemy and stage design in general is more disjointed and random than before. Nothing feels like it belongs.
- Many enemies are tanks that absorb multiple hits.
- The warp portal item exits the stage, which has limited usefulness in a game like this.
- The diving helmet item exists only to start a crappy bonus game with no real reward, also wasting space.
- Quotes are no longer specific to stages, removing any attempt at cleverness that was ever made by the first game.
