Castle Wolfenstein is an action-adventure game developed and published by Muse Software. It was originally released in 1981 for the Apple II, and later ported to the Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, and MS-DOS. It is the first game in the Wolfenstein series.

The game takes place during World War II. The player takes the role of an Allied soldiers captured by the Nazis and held in the eponymous Castle Wolfenstein. The game's goal is to escape the castle and, if possible, steal the war plans for Operation Rheingold, a secret Nazi operation.

Castle Wolfenstein is played from a top-down perspective. The player transverses the castle, whose rooms are randomly arranged and hold varying amounts of chests, guards, as well as the more dangerous SS troopers. In order to win, players have to kill or avoid enemies, unlock doors with keys, and find the castle's exit.

Guards can be killed with relative ease or alternatively robbed at gunpoint. SS troopers are more dangerous and absorb of a lot of fire unless attack with a grenade. They can also identify player disguised in a German uniform.

If caught or killed, the player is sent back to the beginning of the castle, with chest positions, items, and guards being kept the same. However, should the player blow up a chest with explosives instead of slowly unlocking it, a new castle is generated. New castles can also be generated manually.

Castle Wolfenstein sold well and received a number of ports as well as a sequel, Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. However, critics complained about the long waiting times that accompanied opening chests, especially on weaker hardware.
