It's Valentine's Day 2025 and after a couple of years of playing games about love, let's go the other way: A rejection sim! A social simulation fit for sociopaths! An anti-visual novel!
That's how Class of '09 is described by the developers and damn, are they right.
Nicole has... seen some shit, and she hasn't even finished highschool yet. Freshly put through the wringer of life, her family has moved and it's her first day at her new school.
And that's where we come in. We get to choose how Nicole reacts and she isn't the kind of person you usually follow in these games. If you were around for the teenage edginess of the late 2000's, you'll feel like you're right back in highschool. If you weren't, you're in for one big culture shock.
Class of '09 does not hold back at any point. There is no filter. That thing you remember from back then, that still makes you cringe? Yup, it's in here. That horrible, life-changing event? Yeah, that too.
The game is fully voiced and the acting is all-around perfect. The writing is some of the best - or worst, depending on how you feel about the subject materia and language used - in the business. Despite the obvious and overwhelming first impression of edgy and mostly (depending on who you hang around with...) outdated "humor", Class of '09 manages to make you think. There's social commentary here, but you'll have to find it yourself.
You can hate it for the language it uses, but Class of '09 captures the essence of the weirdness of being a teenager, all the things that can go wrong in a highschool setting and just how much life can suck in general.
It hurts, because it is realistic.
