Don't Starve Together is an upcoming game which will contain the highly requested feature of multiplayer to Don't Starve. Don't Starve Together will have a few ways to play with others. So far, local, network and matchmaking play has been confirmed. Many items will be balanced in order to keep the game fair. Game mode and PvP will be optional by the server operator.
There are three different modes; "Survival Mode", wherein the world is reset if all players are ghosts for a period of time, "Endless Mode," wherein the world never resets and players may freely resurrect at the spawn portal, and "Wilderness Mode", wherein there are no ghosts and players are returned to the character selection screen then respawned in random locations.
Mods will be supported, yet some of them that rewrite core code will need to update to the new format. Dedicated, player hosted and LAN servers will be available, and chat will be global or local depending on the server admin's preference. A type of server called "Friends Only" allows a server to be created where by the only people who can join have to be on your steam friends list.
Currently, mods on a server are compatible with anyone who joins the server, as long as they don't add textures or sound files, otherwise, it should be fine. Furthermore, mods that only affect the HUD have no effect on the server and therefore will be compatible with anything.
Ghosts are a new feature that introduces the ability to live after death, although in a downgraded state. Whenever a player dies, a skeleton spawns where they die, they drop their inventory, and become a ghost. Upon death, WX-78 also loses its upgrades and drops an amount of Gears.
NOTE: Current owners of Don’t Starve will be given free access to Don’t Starve Together upon its exit from Early-Access. In purchasing the Frontier Pack, current owners get immediate access to Don’t Starve Together, and a bonus copy for a friend.
