Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, also known as Dune II: Battle for Arrakis in Europe, is a real-time strategy game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games. It was first released for MS-DOS in December of 1992, and later for Amiga and RISC OS.
Nominally a sequel to Dune, Dune II was developed independently from Cryo's title, an adventure and resource management game. While not the first real-time strategy game, Dune II established the mix of base building, resource gathering, and army management that countless later real-time strategy games would use.
Dune II takes place on Arrakis, a desert planet and sole known source of Spice, a substance needed for safe interplanetary travel. Three noble houses fight over Dune: the Atreides, who utilise high-tech weaponry and air power, the Ordos, who rely on subversion and sabotage, and the Harkonnen, who favour brute force and heavy equipment.
The game turned into a commercial success and was met with positive reviews. After an initial release for MS-DOS, Dune II was ported to the Amiga and RISC OS. A Mega Drive version - more adaptation than port - was released as well. In 1998, the game received a remake in the form of Dune 2000, followed by a sequel, Emperor: Battle for Dune in 2001.
