So, it's probably some licensed chess engine from the time, with different settings for the weak opponents such as less thinking time, etc. The backstory they give to each is kinda weird...

Even though it seems like it's trying to represent what a real backstory of a chess player might be, the artist's caricatures of africans and mexicans have a certain tinge of what today would probably be called racism. The white people are *mostly* just wearing normal clothing, but the people of color are ethnic stereotypes...
