Glory of Heracles is a Japanese RPG series by Data East which closely follows the formula established by Dragon Quest (except for the recent DS installment) but using an Ancient Greek setting. Most installments in the series were written by Kazushige Nojima, who would later write many Final Fantasy scenarios starting with the Playstation era.

The third game in the series was the first for the Super Famicom (SNES) and was critically acclaimed for its scenario. The reputation Nojima built with this game earned him a job at Square among the FFVII staff. Director Yoshinori Kitase explicitly asked him to write a mystery scenario for FFVII like the one in GoH3.

In part 5 our hero becomes captain of a Spartan troop.

Leading a party of support characters is a recurring theme not just in this game but also in the series at large. Squall growing up to be the leader of the SEEDs in Final Fantasy VIII is also a continuation of this theme.
