Let's Play Kaze and the Wild Masks - Final thoughts
I discuss how I feel about Kaze and the Wild Masks as a whole.
The game was mostly good. The graphics were decent enough, as was the music. (Stand-out tracks: 1-8, 2-5, 2-7, 2-8, 3-9, 4-1.) The basic gameplay was good, definitely a fine engine to build a platformer. The masks were neat, especially the tiger mask, which was easily my favorite of the four. The biggest problem that I had with the game, by far, is how many levels centered around a running gimmick of some sort. Between the lizard mask, the anglerfish, the rising lava and toxic waste, and the tornado, there were just too many instances of not being able to take the level at one's own pace. Each of those came with their own problems, though the lizard mask stands out because it's one of the masks that form the main gimmick of the game, yet all of the levels that had it were an utter nuisance. While the mine cart levels in Donkey Kong Country games are somewhere similar in concept, moving at a constant speed and deciding when to jump or do another action, I definitely feel like the mine carts were usually more lenient and gave you more time to react to things, not to mention they were generally more interesting. The final battle against Typhoon, notably, incorporates basically every one of the chase gimmicks, and it definitely suffers as a result. Beyond that, the secret levels are as mediocre as ever, easier than the ones in the newer DKC games but also less interesting, and the game is pretty short; 4 worlds is really not many at all for a game like this. In general, the game is decent enough and worth playing at least once, but it's hardly the Donkey Kong Country 4 (or 6) that I'd like.
With that...see you next game!
