So, I looked into it a little bit more, and it is actually true: Shiver Star is post-apocalypse Earth. You can tell by looking at the planet's texture in the level select screen; if you look closely, you can see the continents, and it's very obviously Earth. Wow. That's pretty dark for a Kirby game, and we haven't even gotten to the final bosses yet...
