There are numerous optional challenge areas in the game, places that pit you against situations far tougher then is normal for the floor you're on. New strategies are often needed for them against foes you've likely never met until then but the rewards are two-fold; often the enemies are worth a lot more experience then the others on that floor, helping you gain all-important levels. Secondly, there tend to be great items in those areas as an incentive to want to try them, things you either won't get till later or might not find anywhere else.

Still, they're very dangerous and should be approached with care; you can't take for granted that you'll be able to back away and heal when things get tough.
