As far as locking mechanisms go, magically keyed scrolls that you need to solve multiple puzzles just to reach them would be bad enough. Then needing to read the scrolls and figure out which one belongs to which alcove almost seems unnecessary, a final bit of work which could easily have been avoided by using some other locking mechanism.

Collecting keys may be an issue as the locks could possibly be picked - an option we lack as there are no lockpicks so far - and pressure plates at the end of each puzzle area has the risk of enemies triggering them or something collapsing on them. The scrolls however will eventually rot away rendering the whole puzzle unsolvable, not including the possibility of them being magically treated to avoid that.

It's safe to say that whoever built the tricks and traps within Mount Grimrock had a penchant for teleporter puzzles, pit and switch puzzles and timing trickery. I'd of happily settled on solving a word search to open the way down but it seems I'm not going to be so lucky.
