Let's Play Magical Diary (Part 11)
Remillia finishes her first year in Magic School.
Despite what this playthrough shows, there are actually a few choices you can make in the final exam. The main issue was the fact Remillia was made for fighting with her maxed out Red and Black magic and she was forced to follow the non offensive route. Both Virginia and Ellen have a plan but if you are following one of their romance paths, you automatically take their idea (if you are not, you get to choose). So we had to do Ellen's idea to rush for the crystal rather than fight the monsters. It really was a bad combination for Remillia but thankfully she tanked the hits and pulled through.
Having played through it four times already (twice with Ellen's idea, one fail at the start, and once with Virginia's plan) and with various stats each time, there are a bunch of hidden choices or easier paths that can make the test effortless. But at the same time, each of those new choices cost mana so hope you have the Smarts or at least a means to regain mana.
Overall, the game is rather entertaining. Here are a few pros and cons I can come up with...
Pros:
Large variety of spells including 'useless' spells. She is a beginner so learning something less useful is always a possibility.
The developer certainly thought of numerous options that both have an effect on future events and some that don't.
The player is not the center of the universe. You play as a student and you get no special treatment from the plot. What happens is entirely based on the choices you make.
Cons:
Spell costs are a bit high for a number of spells. It makes sense for a student but it also leaves very little room for error unless you save scum.
Despite the numerous choices, it can still be a bit hard to shape your character's personality due the game deciding the tone for the responses.
Think there needs more opportunities for merits and possibly money.
The game is a bit short. Of course that is a compliment if I wish to continue the story in that school.
I do hope a game similar to this does expand this sort of genre of game. Perhaps with more choices like if it does have multiple halls in a school, allowing to pick one and going through an arc in that. But of course HanakoGames only has so many writers so I understand the limitations.
