I still don't know where Smirnov is, maybe he fell somewhere way before any of the outcome mattered in this battle. But I'd like to think he was the ever relentless comrade in arms, with infinte reserves of both armor (albeit light ones that sink in the frozen river) and men (with light colored clothing, perhaps clean uniform?), who spearheads the defence to cross the river and beyond.
