Let's Play - Nemesis / Gradius - (ZX Spectrum) - 01 - Terrible Port is Terrible
GOOD IDEA TO READ DESCRIPTION! :
My first commentated LP of a shoot em up. In retrospect - a better game might've been a better idea for a first SHUMP playthrough, but I promised Gamestone a commentated LP of this game.. so.. here it is.
A odd footnote in the Gradius series - the home computer ports (in this case, ZX Spectrum) are universally terrible, this is no exception. It's not quite on the same level of badness as the Salamander port, but it's nearly there.
It's not neigh unplayable, but - it's borderline neigh unplayable. I am not exaggerating - the hit detection is dodgy at best and facepalm worthy at worst. The hitbox is BIGGER than the sprite, and the shield doesn't always work. And those tiny bullets? Avoid those buggers like the plague - they can kill from great distances - you don't even have to collide with them for them to kill you.
The shield is your only hope of getting anywhere in this game, and it looks far easier than it actually is.
There were periods where I didn't actually say anything in the original recording (this game's bad quality speaks for itself), so whilst editing the music in I recorded additional commentary, and cut, replaced and added commentary where I thought it was either more interesting... or.. yeah.
The "singing" to music was obviously added afterwards.
This ended up being more trouble than it was worth, so I won't be doing THAT again, like, ever XD
I don't tend to LP shoot em ups because I don't find them all that interesting to watch, I find watching boss battles more interesting, so, there you go.
But this game is terrible. So. Yeah.
Oddly enough I didn't think this was anywhere near as painful to play as the latter half of Asterix and the Secret Mission. Go figure.
This might very well be my shortest LP. Gradius 1 was not exactly the longest game in the world.
