Need for Speed: Carbon is another part of one of the most famous arcade racers. The described product resembles its predecessors in many respects. References to Need for Speed: Most Wanted are visible primarily due to the active participation of law enforcement officers, who should be avoided at all costs. Extensive tuning options for individual machines were taken from two games from the Need for Speed: Underground series. Of course, Need for Speed: Carbon also has many completely new elements to offer, such as racing in canyons or the ability to lead your own team. The game was created for all major hardware platforms. The key point of the program is, of course, the extensive career mode. Interestingly, we play the same character that we controlled in Need for Speed: Most Wanted. The main character returns to his hometown of Palmont. After reaching the place, it turns out that enemy gangs have taken full control over the organization of illegal street races. The player's task will, of course, be to win competitions and at the same time capture subsequent sectors of the city. Similarly to Need for Speed: Wanted, progress is shown through cutscenes with real actors.
The area prepared by the producers is even larger than before. The player can, of course, move freely around the city. Taking control of a given sector is usually possible only after defeating the enemy team. To do this, the player must create and then lead his own team. The team may consist of drivers, engineers or mechanics. The people employed by the player have precisely defined skills. Most of the actions are used already during the actual race. For example, a player can ask teammates to block a selected opponent. Defeating all enemies occupying a given sector of the city unlocks the opportunity to join the main race, in which one of the leading competitors appears. These races take place in canyons. The competition itself was organized in a rather unusual way. The first race requires you to follow your opponent's car. Points are collected depending on the distance between two cars. The second race assumes the need to maintain a solid lead over the rival. He will try to collect the points allocated at the start. The authors of the game in question have prepared about 60 different vehicles. The machines are divided into three different classes - exotic, muscle and tuner. The differences between individual classes are quite significant. For example, muscle cars should take part in races organized on straight road sections. Tuner class cars, on the other hand, can be useful on winding and very demanding routes. The player can, of course, subject previously purchased vehicles to additional modifications (visual and mechanical). Noteworthy is the Autosculpt module prepared by the manufacturers, thanks to which you can personally model some elements of the vehicle's body. NFS: Carbon offers a very wide range of race types, including drifting, which was missing in Most Wanted.
The differences between the individual versions of NFS: Carbon mainly concern the quality of graphics. Additionally, the editions for the Wii and PlayStation 3 consoles offer full use of the controllers' gyroscopic functions. The sound layer consists mainly of the sounds of the engines of individual machines. Famous actors appear during cutscenes, such as Emmanuelle Vaugier or Shaw Madson.
