Undeniably the best RPG on the system, and honestly probably one of the best RPGs on any system.

The game drops you in "in media res", right in the middle of a terrorist mission to destroy a reactor. You immediately grasp the main character is not just a standard JRPG hero, he seems to be kind of cold and doesn't seem to really care about his mission or his companions.

Compare that to almost every other JRPG of the era, which began with the completely boring trope of the main character's village being destroyed (FF7 has the kindness to get around to the main character's village being destroyed in *flashback* about 6 hours into the game, after you're already invested and interested in the characters and the world).

The lego style people and static backgrounds have a definitive 90's style to them which have a certain nostalgia to them. The recent remake with AAA quality graphics gives hope that the whole game will get such a nice make-over, and is certainly not the only flaw of the game being from the 90s. There is a very interesting story about the translation of the game, where the translator took quite a few liberties in localization which was common at the time (see Metal Gear Solid for another example of a localization which took liberties which sometimes changed the meanings of certain scenes).
