Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter developed by Gray Matter Interactive and published by Activision. It was originally released on November 19, 2001 for Windows, and later ported to Linux, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 2.
The game takes place in 1943. The player once takes the role of William "B.J." Blazkowicz, a U.S. Army Ranger and operative for the Office of Secret Actions. BJ undertakes a number missions against Nazi Germany, clashing with Helga von Bülow and Wilhelm "Deathshead" Strasse, the heads of the Paranormal Division and SS Special Projects Division.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a post-Half Life FPS with the conventions of its time, and features network multiplayer in addition to a singleplayer campaign. The mutiplayer mode was later supplanted by Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, a free-to-play multiplayer-only spin-off originally intended to be an expansion pack for Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
The title received positive reviews and a number of ports. The Xbox and PlayStation 2 ports, titled Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War and Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection, feature and extra chapter set in Egypt as well as a number of other changes.
