Let's Play Team Buddies! Part 5: Chilling Fields
With the Wolf-Tank reduced to scrap metal, it's time to take to the Arctic mountains! Well, it's got to be some form of mountain - who'd go skiing in the Arctic circle? Not me, that's for sure! Dr Madasallorie, the much-quoted scientist, finally makes an appearance, but not before first destroying another bunch of enemy Buddies and then herding several dim penguins from one side of a circuitous field to another. It's all worth it though, as he ends up joining the good Blue Buddy team!
A new biome, again, means new weapons, new mechanics and a new Buddy! Stealthy Buddies are (I think) Geordies who have the unique (to Buddies at least) ability to cloak. After a couple of seconds without shooting, they'll turn invisible (translucent to team-mates and a special type of Buddy), falling off of the radar which allows them to travel without detection. The mention with the Wolf-Tank of the cloaking not working on water is completely true for the Stealthy; walk on water, and your cloak breaks, alerting any nearby enemies to your position (if they're paying attention). Stealthies can steal from enemy Buddies by melee-ing them, first filching their firearm, then stealing their slugs. Firing their weapon causes their cloak to disappear, as does taking damage. The only sign that a Stealthy is around is a faint shadow, meaning you need to look closely in order to find one that isn't lugging a crate around. A neat touch is that the CPU-controlled Buddies will know to fire at any crates that are being carried by an invisible Stealthy, but only if they're paying attention. If they're dealing with other things, rob 'em blind!
There's also a new mechanic around, in the form of Ice. Freeze Rays and Freeze Turrets can cause a Buddy to become frozen - the longer they're exposed to the chilling temperatures, the more frozen they become, turning a cyan hue. If a Buddy is slightly frozen, they take increased damage. If they're completely frozen (ie the body is a solid cyan colour), a decent strike will make 'em explode. Freeze Rays will only start doing damage if an enemy is Frozen, but weapons that aren't fire-based which can cause damage will cause a Buddy to pop, no matter how much health they have. A fun thing to do is freeze an enemy Buddy who's wielding explosives and running up to them, hoping they kill themselves in the fracas.
Other than increased damage, being frozen doesn't impede on a Buddy at all, and players that don't notice this tend to get a nasty shock if they're gung-ho with their weapons.
