Story: 9/10
The story of To The Moon really had me stuck for a long bit there. There was too much mystery, too many vague explanations, too many points where the player is in the dark. That changed when we started diving into Johnny's childhood memories. You begin to realize that a lot of aspects of Johnnys life come from his brothers death. From his favorite book series, to his mother calling him Joey, when we finally see the hidden memory a lot of things become clear. Many years ago Johnny met River at a carnival and promised to meet her again, and if he didn't that they would meet up at the moon instead...But he then forgets that encounter...The entire time the player is fighting to get him to the moon without even knowing why, but once you figure the story out it becomes a punch in the gut. Memories are changed and in the end they make it to the moon together...Wow that was a terrible paragraph. In short, this story was amazing and I loved it.
Audio: 8/10
Great soundtracks all around! A few of the songs I actually caught myself humming as I went throughout my day. Nothing really wrong here!
Controls :
Point and click to move around and interact with objects. It was pretty wonky honestly and at times was frustrating. Sometimes the movements would lag doing the puzzles or your character would randomly stop moving. Nothing game breaking, just a little irritating.
Graphics: 8/10
I am a HUGE sucker for pixel art. There's something about this art style that just sucks me in and makes me fall in love with it instantly! This game was made with RPG Maker and it BLEW MY MIND. There were so many little details throughout the world. So many custom sprites filling the empty parts of sets and so many tiny animations here and there that really showed how much the dev's cared about what they were doing. Everything was really polished and defined. In the end I almost cried because of a pile of pixels...And that's pretty amazing.
TL;DR
To The Moon is absolutely heart wrenching. It drags the player on and on, begging for answers, until the final moments where everything is revealed all at once. From the tragic tale of Joeys death. To the first encounter with River that ended in a promise unfulfilled. All the way to erasing his wife from his memory completely and rebuilding it in a different way. This story has a beautiful mix of tragedy, comedy, and charm to carry the player through every emotion imaginable. Aside from the beautiful story the game provides incredibly detailed pixel style graphics, throw in some beautiful soundtracks and sound effects and you have To The Moon. The controls were a bit wonky and hard to handle but in the end that was hardly on my mind. Play through this game, it's an experience that needs to be had.
Do I recommend this game?: YES. BRING TISSUES.
Should you buy this game?: Full price? Absolutely. Every penny is paid back with what you get from the experience.
