When I'm doing the missions with mutants and reticulans I think back to the beginning of the let's play where they were dangerous; the flatsters were extremely tricky to defeat and the morelmen were damage sponges that soaked up volleys of fire. The reticulans had advanced technology compared to what we were using and I had to rely on them for reloads of the alien laser weapons we started with.

Gaston taking on those missions alone is far from what I remember the game being like when I played it before but then I don't think I ever built anyone in that game quite as terrifying as Gaston.
