The Starghosts have an ultimate strategy in their attacks on Earth and now we're going to see them. While they've been attacking areas conventionally - if any attack by them can be classed as that - they have also been erecting devices that, if left unchecked, spell doom to an entire region of the planet. It's these devices that we need to stop above all else, missions that we need to do above all others.

They are the Pillars of Death. Not only are they a way to potentially lose the game they can unfortunately break your game permanently, rendering it unwinnable in an unintended way.

The 1.2 official patch of UFO Aftershock has a bug where the Pillars of Death that you are meant to be taking down in a mission have a chance of simply not spawning. The mission generation works in such a way that once a mission has appeared on the geoscope the map is set, reloading once it's there won't change anything. A map that doesn't spawn the Pillar of Death is unwinnable and abandoning the mission pretty much renders it permanently unusable, losing all resources gained from it and, if it's a base, all the base facilities. If that happens enough times you can find yourself quickly running out of territory, incurring resource losses and possibly losing the game. It didn't happen in my first playthroughs of the game years ago but it's happening now and it would be a shame to have to abandon the Let's Play because of an unpatched bug. I spent nearly an hour trying to record this video, each time I got a Pillar of Death mission that was bugged and unwinnable.

Fortunately there's a solution. An unofficial 1.3 patch for UFO Aftershock was made, one that is compatible with all saves in 1.2. Among the many things it does is fix almost all of the times when a Pillar of Death won't spawn in a mission, making that occurrence a rarity rather then common. If any of you are playing the game I'd encourage you to download and apply the patch so you don't encounter this problem. From now on I will always make a different save if a PIllar of Death mission is on the geoscape just in case it's one that isn't winnable , requiring a reload so that I'm not robbed of territory due to a bug.

This bug won't defeat this let's play, we will see it through.
