Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #45: The Wonderful Thing About Armour
Armour is one of those things in X-COM that you quickly take for granted once you get it. Why we’re not given the option of starting with conventional armour is anyone's guess, but the personal armour tends to get built in bulk at the start and then only when you lose a soldier. It becomes the standard attire of your squad, save for the odd time you forget to equip someone with it. The power suit takes the same position the personal armour once had once you have enough of it, given to everyone as standard and then barely thought about beyond that point.
Each set of armour is greatly advantageous but none of them will save you from a lucky roll on behalf of the aliens. A single heavy plasma can kill someone in a power suit just as dead as someone with no armour at all, though it’s less likely. Similarly, a person in no armour can survive a heavy plasma shot without dying, though they’re much less likely to do compared to someone in a power suit. Some might argue through this logic that it’s silly to give everyone the best armour as they’ll likely die anyway when they’re hit, but that’s foolish; I want the odds tipped as much in my favour as they can be.
So when you’re playing the game and one of your soldiers is hit but doesn’t die – or even better, sustains no injuries at all – remember that that’s likely because of the armour you manufactured for them.
