LG그룹의 창업주인 연암 구인회 회장은 1931년 경상남도 진주시에서 구인회상점이라는 상호명의 포목상을 창업하였다. 1940년 주식회사 구인상회로 발전, 사업 운수와 무역 등으로 사업이 확대되었다. 해방 이후 사업들을 모두 정리하고 부산으로 터전을 옮겼다. 당시 동생인 구철회(LIG그룹 초대 회장)와 함께 동업을 하였는데, 사업이 확장이 되면서 1941년 사돈관계에 있던 허창수(현재의 GS그룹) 일가와 6대 4의 지분을 가지고 동업을 시작하였다. 1945년 해방이후에는 조선흥업사(朝鮮興業社)를 설립하였다.
1947년 LG그룹의 직접적인 모태인 락희화학공업사(현 LG화학), 1958년에 금성사(현 LG전자)가 설립되는 것으로 오늘날 LG그룹의 역사가 본격적으로 시작되었다. 창업주인 연암 구인회 회장은 국가에 기여하는 사업을 해야한다는 사명 하에 대한민국 최초 플라스틱 생산, TV 생산 등의 시장을 주도하는 선구적 기업으로 키워나갔다. 평소 구 회장은 인간 사이의 화합을 기원하는 인화라는 정신으로 경영을 하였는데, 이는 LG그룹의 경영이념이 되어 계열분리가 되기 전 세계적으로 전례를 찾아볼 수 없는 57년의 동업관계를 이끌어내기도 하였다. 세계적인 전자기업 필립스는 이러한 이념이 LG에 신뢰를 가지는 계기가 되었고, 이에 LG필립스를 공동설립 하였다고 밝힌 바 있다.
