When Ryoma finally comes face to face with Takechi, he explains his reasoning for everything he did. Takechi believed that Toya and Ryoma were idealists, trying to overthrow the status quo without bloodshed, and they were doomed to fail. When Toya wanted to leave Ryoma in charge of Tosa, Takechi had him killed, so that his dreams of a revolution could come to fruition, even if he wouldn’t be alive to see it. Takechi claims he took Ryoma’s name so that Ryoma would challenge him, and that no matter who won, Sakamoto Ryoma would change the nation, whether it was by bloodshed or unification.

After a fierce battle, Ryoma refused to strike his brother down, even after everything he’d done. Takechi, seeing the strength of Ryoma’s convictions, realized that he’d foolishly tried to exploit the class system to destroy it, and that being part of the problem meant he could never solve it. Takechi understood that love would be the ultimate force to inspire change, and not pain or anger as he’d believed for so long. Ryoma refuses to believe his brother had given up on him or love, as Takechi had asked Katsura to watch over Ryoma in Kyo. Ryoma took this as proof that Takechi had always loved him.

Despite everything, Ryoma forgave Takechi. As the sun rises on the pair, Takechi is glad that he has a chance to right his wrongs, as he reveals that he’d been manipulated all along by Yamauchi Yodo. Yodo suddenly appears and shoots Ryoma, but Takechi takes the bullet for him as Yodo explains his plan to allow the British into the country through Tosa, and sell Japan to the British Empire. Yodo again shoots Ryoma, several times, but is terrified when Ryoma stands to face him anyway. As he attempts to flee, Yodo is cornered by Nagakura, Okita and Hijikata, and begins to beg for his life. Ryoma renounces his name and tells Yodo that neither of them can determine Japan’s future. He says it’s in the hands of the people of Japan, now and in the future, and he strikes down Yodo.
