We introduce the splitting model as a nonabelian variant of the abelian sandpile growth model (ASGM). For the ASGM, several limiting shape results have been proved, using the abelian property and monotonicity. Neither property holds for the splitting model, but nevertheless we present new limiting shape results, including an octagonal limiting shape. Joint work with Haiyan Liu.
