This episode is a prequel; set just between the first street fighter and street fighter II.

On a gameplay basis, this game brought a lot of things :
- 3 Level Super art
- Alpha counter (a special counter attack that drains gauge)
- Alpha combos (the ability to interrupt a basic attack animation by performing another movement of equal or greater strenght)
