Liverpool's quadruple chase in 2021 22: How Reds can one up Manchester United's treble
Liverpool is still chasing history in 2021 22. seeking an unprecedented quadruple of titles. The Reds are battling on four competitive fronts: the English Premier League. the UEFA Champions League. the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup (League Cup). Jurgen Klopp's team has four chances to lift silverware beginning with the Carabao Cup final on Feb. 27. If the Reds can manage all four. they will be the first men's team in England to win the three major domestic trophies plus the European crown. Manchester City did their own quadruple in 2018 2019. including the Community Shield. but they were not champions of Europe; Manchester United won the Champions League in 1998 1999 and lifted the FA Cup in addition to the Premier League. but they were knocked out in the fifth round of the League Cup and never reached four trophies. Outside of England. German side Bayern Munich won four trophies in 2012 2013. including the Champions League — but also including the one off DFL Supercup (the equivalent of the Community Shield). Looking back over half a century. Celtic's famous Lisbon Lions bagged themselves five trophies in one season. including the then European Cup. plus the Scottish title. the Scottish Cup. the Scottish League Cup and the local Glasgow Cup. Here's where Liverpool stands in each of the four competitions in which it is involved: UEFA Champions League Seven matches played. seven matches won — Liverpool's 2021 2022 Champions League campaign could not have started much better. Klopp's men won all six group stage matches in what many believed was the toughest Champions League group. Those victories came at home and away against AC Milan. Porto and Atletico Madrid. seeing the Reds safely through to the knockout stages with an average of one goal conceded per match — compared to 2.84 scored. Liverpool then started the Round of 16 with an impressive 2 0 result at reigning Italian champions Inter Milan. setting themselves up for a likely berth to the final eight of the competition. Carabao Cup Liverpool could pick up its first trophy of the season on Feb. 27 in the Carabao Cup Final. That's when the Reds take on Chelsea at Wembley (11.30 a.m. ET kickoff). If Liverpool wins. it will be the club's ninth triumph in the competition — and that will be a record. Currently. Liverpool and Manchester City share the mark for most trophies with eight victories each. FA Cup The next challenge for Liverpool in this competition comes on Wednesday. Mar. 2 (3.15 p.m. ET kickoff) with an FA Cup fifth round match against Norwich City. The Canaries are struggling in the Premier League this season. currently sitting third from bottom with a massive negative goal difference of 36 and Klopp's side will not be intimidated. especially at home. In the league fixture against Norwich back in August. the Reds won 3 0 at Carrow Road and then again in the Carabao Cup the following month. Liverpool repeated the feat by the same scoreline at the same venue. Premier League This might be the most unlikely part of the 2021 22 quadruple challenge. but the Reds are best placed to capitalize should league leaders Manchester City slip up at all. Liverpool currently sits second. with a game in hand. albeit currently nine points behind City. While Liverpool has to continue to rack up wins. the April 9 head to head against Man City at the Etihad will probably go a long way toward determining the league title winner.
