Released originally as the bands fourth single in 1969 and reaching number 3 in the Uk singles chart, Living in the Past is perhaps now one of the best known songs by Jethro Tull, being distinctive for it's 5/4 time signature and unusual flute sound.
According to Ian Anderson, he wrote the tune in approximately one hour in his room at a Holiday Inn 'on the banks of the Charles River', Boston, Massachusetts, on 12 February 1969. The distinctive mix of percussion, bass, guitar and flute blends seemlesly into an expansive string sound, which, when combined with the organ in the final section, culminates in an energetic flute solo that could only have come from Mr Anderson himself!
I really enjoyed adding my own spin on the classic track, using the glissando headjoint to exagerate the pitch bends and experimenting with production techniques to shape the sound to be as authentic as possible.
