Featuring beloved characters from the iconic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons—including the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and others—players engage in spirited races across diverse environments inspired by classic cartoon settings. The game employs a variety of power-ups and weapons to keep the competition fierce.
While sharing similarities with titles like Mario Kart and Crash Team this title distinguishes itself with awe-inspiring graphics, particularly noteworthy for its time, engaging track designs, and the undeniable charm of its Looney Tunes characters.
However, it's essential to address a notable concern: the game tends to inundate players with an abundance of power-up boxes and ACME cans (collect five for a turbo boost) strewn across the tracks at a rapid pace, alternating every few seconds.
This dynamic introduces an element of unpredictability, which can be both advantageous and detrimental, especially in races with a maximum of six competitors.
While it allows for sudden reversals, it also introduces frustration as uncertainty takes precedence. Throughout the game, and notably in later levels, players may find themselves frequently succumbing to lightning, laser guns, or various comical obstacles, shifting the focus from skillful driving to sheer luck.
Although similar complaints exist for Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing, Looney Tunes Space Race redefines the concept of luck in the realm of kart racing.
In summary, Infogrames's release delivers an enjoyable, humorous, and engaging experience that strikes a balance between accessibility and challenge.
Yet, the excessively generous distribution of items significantly impacts gameplay, preventing it from securing a position among the very best kart racing games, particularly outside the Dreamcast gaming scene.
