- Mike Tyson Boxing (PlayStation Version) - Showcase Mode Longplay -
Released by CodeMasters for the PS1 in 2000, Mike Tyson Boxing is a video game that revolves around the renowned boxer, Mike Tyson, celebrated for his dominant presence in the ring. Offering various modes such as exhibition matches, career and tournament modes, as well as multiplayer options, players can immerse themselves in boxing action either against the AI or challenge friends.
Despite its promising premise, the game falls short of its potential. It boasts straightforward boxing gameplay, the inclusion of Mike Tyson as a character, and passable yet colorful graphics, as well as a diverse cast of characters, each with their own background stories - surely good ingredients - but sadly it fails to capitalize on these strengths due to a perplexing flaw: the AI's lackluster engagement.
Isn't it unbelievable? Well, seeing is believing. Just take a look at my video. There's no option to adjust the difficulty level, so it's not a matter of me choosing an easy mode. The problem lies in the minimal challenge presented by the AI opponents. Initially, I attributed it to the Showcase mode- a 16-boxer tournament - but to my dismay, the lack of opposition persisted when I tried the Career mode.
Although the level of competition does increase slightly, the game still fails to offer a significant challenge. Completing the Career mode is more often hindered by boredom than by difficulty, to the extent that quitting mid-game becomes a consideration, rather than enduring countless bouts against timid opponents. Frankly, it remains a mystery to me why CodeMasters squandered such potential.
In the video, you'll notice moments where I deliberately lower my guard, expecting my opponent to engage, only to find minimal response. Within a span of 15 seconds, my adversary barely throws three punches, landing only one hit. While I've often criticized games for their frustrating difficulty levels or unfair challenges, encountering the opposite leaves me at a loss for words.
