When Bill Willingham was a kid watching ‘Fractured Fairy Tales’ during the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, he was amazed at the liberties taken by the animators and writers as they re-imagined the stories of Red Riding Hood. That’s when his mom gave him the public domain talk, meaning after a standard period of time…blah, blah, blah...basically, characters like Snow White and Potato Face Blindman can be copied and used by anyone! Years later, after a brief stint of living in his van down by the river and working on comic series such as Coventry and Pantheon, Willingham pitched the idea of Fables to DC/Vertigo in 2001. Taking place in New York and utilizing characters from well-known fairy tales living in a secret community, Fables depicts some of western culture’s most beloved and feared childhood characters as hard-boiled detectives, womanizers, and...well, the pigs are still pigs. The first volume of Fables, Legends of Exile, became a smash hit, helping usher in the resurgence of fairy tales in the new millenia. Its success has led to over 140 issues of the comic and spawned numerous failed TV productions, a film deal, and the TellTale videogame prequel, The Wolf Among Us. Have fun!
