Transcript:

In 1990, four employees of a software publishing service called Softdisk began spending their evenings working on their own games. They were designer Tom Hall, artist Adrian Carmack, programmer John Carmack, and gaming's Fabio, John Romero. After Romero discovered a way to have quick side-scrolling graphics on the PC, the four friends created a remake of Super Mario Bros 3 for the computer on "borrowed" company machines which Nintendo obviously dismissed.

Around this time Romero starting receiving fan letters from multiple people that he quickly realized were actually all from the same address. Upon investigation Romero discovered the sole author to be Scott Miller of 3D realms. Teaming up with Miller, the four members began work on an original side-scroller called Commander Keen, again using company equipment at a lake house in Shreveport, Louisiana which must've been real beautiful and romantic.

Once the game released, Softdisk finally realized where their computers had been going and legal drama ensued. Finally an agreement was made for the team to provide a new title to Softdisk every two months for a period of time. In early 1991, Id Software was officially formed. Id Software went on to release huge games like Doom and Wolfenstein and John Romero continues his quest to become a real-life angel to this day.
