An inquest's heard that a commanding officer - described as "inspirational", who was killed on a routine patrol in Afghanistan, wanted more helicopters to support his troops. Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, CO of the Welsh Guards, - the most senior British army officer to be killed in action since the Falklands War - suffered fatal injuries when his Viking armoured vehicle drove over an IED. The Coroner recorded a verdict of "Unlawful Killing". Hugh Kirby was in court.
