The M-96 Mattock is the best assault rifle in Mass Effect 2, and a very good assault rifle in Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

M-96 Mattock comes in ME3 from the Mass Effect 2. It is a semi-automatic rifle and happens to be a perfect tool for medium-range targets. It is extremely accurate but not that deadly. However, you can compensate the lack of deadliness with a couple of upgrades and the already mentioned high accuracy. M-96 Mattock is an interesting mix of an assault rifle's low heat production and a sniper rifle's punch. Those two make a perfect couple and ONLY semi-auto mode will force you to keep an eye on the ammo. At the same time, the delay between shots is minimal and your shooting productivity only depends on how fast you can hit the Fire button. M-96 Mattock is a perfect weapon to kill the bad guys from the distance and it even happens to be closer to the sniper rifle than to the assault. But, due to the lack of proper damage, this rifle can’t be used in close range combats, so try to pick something devastating as your secondary weapon.

The M-96 Mattock can be found during the mission Grissom Academy: Emergency Evacuation, on a couch before reaching Seanne Bellarmine. A second upgrade can sometimes be found in the security room unlocked by David Archer, if he was rescued in Overlord. It is also purchasable from Kassa Fabrication post-mission if it was missed.

- The Mattock's main advantage is its highly accurate and damaging semi-automatic fire, making it very useful for pinpoint (headshot) shooting at medium to long range where it can neutralize most enemies with less than one clip.
- When equipped with an Assault Rifle Precision Scope, it is versatile enough to serve as a main or even sole weapon under almost any circumstances.
- Although the Mattock is a semi-automatic rifle, it has very little delay between shots, allowing it to be fired almost as quickly as the user can pull the trigger.
- While the Mattock does sufficient damage to kill in one shot, a squad of close-range enemies can cause real problems due to its low capacity and its semi-automatic nature. Thus it is advisable to carry an alternative weapon such as a submachine gun to keep the low weight and offset your close-range shortcomings. Using Armor-Piercing Ammo so that a single round goes through multiple targets can help with close quarters combat.
