A playthrough of American Laser Games' 1990 arcade FMV light gun shooter, Mad Dog McCree.

This video shows the game being played as it appeared in Majesco's 2009 compilation disc for the Nintendo Wii, Mad Dog McCree: Gunslinger Pack.

What is there really to say about Mad Dog McCree that hasn't already been said a million times since its release in 1990? It's appeared on nearly every platform it could've possibly been put on (though it is strangely absent on the big 32-bit platforms), and the game doesn't change between them. Well, except for the quality of the graphics. The original game was on a laserdisc, which still looks good even now, and some of those older ports didn't, shall we say... do justice to it. The Sega CD port, anyone?

The Wii version looks great, though. There are a few compression and interlacing artifacts, but the video is generally really clean and clear. The Wii remote is the perfect controller for the game, and if you like the old light gun rail shooters, you've probably already played it. If not, Mad Dog McCree is a blast, but it's very difficult. There is relief if you persist though. Since the game is all full-screen FMV (no sprite overlays here!), the action doesn't vary a whole lot from game to game. With regular playing you'll eventually start to memorize scene cues and enemy placements, and the whole thing starts to become much easier. And more fun, I've always thought.

If you like American Laser Games' stuff, I'd really recommend the Wii's Gunslinger Pack. I love this disc! It has Mad Dog 1 and 2 and The Last Bounty Hunter, all on the same disc, and they're all pretty faithful to the arcade originals. I just wish that there was a 480p mode and an option to turn off the crosshair, but those are nitpicks.

Now, ALG, or Digital Leisure, or whoever has the rights at this point - can you PLEASE hurry up and remaster Space Pirates already?! There's probably a port of Mad Dog McCree available for the screen on my washing machine by now, so why am I still playing the VGA Dos version of Space Pirates? Hint: it's not because playing a PC game from 1992 in 2018 is the simplest or most convenient option.

Sorry for the rant there. Seriously, Space Pirates is easily my favorite American Laser Games FMV shooter, and the only console port it ever got was the 3DO one. That was good in 1995, but it'd be nice to have it on a modern machine that runs the video at a higher resolution than 320x200 and uses a pointer controller. So, basically, any current system but the Xbox would be perfect.
