A playthrough of Bandai's 1996 license-based pinball game for the Sony PlayStation, Saban's Power Rangers Zeo: Full Tilt Battle Pinball.

Played through on the hard difficulty level.

Power Rangers Zeo Full Tilt pinball is one of the lesser-known games from the mid-1990s based on the famous kids' television show, but like most of the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis PR games, this too was quite a nice surprise.

Kaze, the developer responsible for the Super Pinball and Digital Pinball series of games, did a nice job of imbuing their standard pinball game formula with all sorts of Power Rangers elements to make it feel unexpectedly fresh. Though the tables aren't particularly difficult nor complex, especially given that they all occupy a single screen and do not scroll, they are well put together. Each stage has you taking out a bad guy, collecting Power Rangers helmets in order to transform into Megazord, and then fighting off the big enemy to clear the area.

It is just as hokey as it sounds, but it stays true to the character of the old show and can be quite the guilty pleasure. For a game released in 1996, the pre-rendered graphics still look surprisingly nice with a fair amount of detail and color, and the soundtrack is just as embarrassingly listenable now as it was 20 years ago. You wouldn't ever catch me humming the Power Rangers theme song in public, but it's hard to dislike something as genuinely corny and catchy as this is. Much of the rest of the music in the game fits that same description. The wailing pop guitar riffs throughout really contribute to the game's overwhelmingly 90s vibe. I also really appreciated the badly-dubbed clips pulled from the TV show that play regularly throughout the game.

Power Rangers Zeo Pinball was far better than I expected it to be, just like the SNES and Genesis Power Ranger games were. If you find yourself ever pining for the 90s, pop this disc in. It'll feel like home, no matter how cringeworthy it might be.

*YouTube's copyright scan didn't like the title theme playing during the ending, so I had to cut the sound from that part. Sorry!* And in case anyone was wondering, the sound quality during the intro really does sound this bad. It's so tinny!
