How to Double Team in Pre-Play (Pre Snap)
1.) Hover over / control the defend you want to assign to a receiver
2.) Go into preplay (press A on Xbox controller)
3.) Choose Man Coverage by moving the right stick up
4.) Choose an eligible receiver you want to defend.
You can repeat this another time to assign two defenders to a receiver. Or if you're feeling wild, assign 3 to a single receiver!
Joking aside, double teaming a receiver (or back) is an important mechanic on defense in Madden NFL 21. Trust me, I've been cheesed so many times by runningbacks. In my experience, putting two linebackers on the back can really help stop this cheese. When you notice an opponent throwing to a specific receiver who's a superstar, this is also very helpful. With the introduction of x factors to the madden franchise, there are certain receivers you HAVE to basically double otherwise they'll pretty much catch everything and be unstoppable.
Also, it's just good to mix up your defense and keep your opponent on their toes. You can mix and match coverages to confuse your opponent's offense. You can set half the field to be on man coverage and the other half to zone. If your opponent makes the wrong read (thinking it's zone when it's man or vice versa), you can easily get interceptions. The more complicated it is for your opponent to figure out what defense you're running, the better it is for you. It can frustrate your opponents.
Example:
One side of your defense is zone. One size is man defense. Your opponent snaps the ball and makes an initial read that you're running man defense. He then tosses it to a receiver who he thinks is "open" but you pick him off because you have a defender lurking in a zone. Easy.
