Alexander Emanuel, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), is a leader in power systems research who has spent much of his career studying harmonic pollution. When the electrical grid becomes polluted with harmonics it can reduce the life of transformers, overheat conductors, and degrade insulation. With PhD Candidate Grazia Todeschini, Emanuel is studying whether wind generators can serve as active filters to counteract this pollution.
