In this video, Mahalo computer expert Sean Hewitt explains what you need to know about malware.
What is Malware?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Malware" is short for malicious software that's designed to disrupt or deny operations on your computer or violate your privacy. There are different forms of malware, including spyware, adware, viruses, worms and trojans. For example, if advertisements randomly pop up on your desktop, you may have malware.
Detecting Malware on Your Computer
---------------------------------------------------------------------
If your computer is running slowly, you may want to check if you have picked up any malware. Locate malware by viewing the processes running on your computer.
1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open your computer's process monitor.
2. Examine the processes running on your computer. If you see any that are unrecognizable or using a lot of memory, use an internet search engine to find out if it is malware.
"Hijacked" Applications
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Applications are considered "hijacked" if they are a legitimate program that is also running malicious software. You can determine if you're running a hijacked process by using an anti-malware program. Sean recommends using programs such as Panda Cloud Antivirus, Malwarebytes, or Norton Antivirus. Make sure your antivirus program covers serveral topics, such as viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, or suspicious items. Downloading one of these programs is a good way to clean up your system.
