Manchester City almost signed this player instead of David Silva
Manchester City felt invincible in the early 2010s.
They had hired Roberto Mancini and were well on their way to ending almost four decades without a trophy. Their transfer targets read like a who’s who of international football.
Whilst City were unable to prise the likes of David Villa, Kaka and Franck Ribery away from the elite, they became more than happy with building their own stars: Vincent Kompany, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and David Silva, but to name a few.
The latter of those names, however, almost never arrived. In a summer where City spent £24m each on Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli, they were eyeing up the same figure for Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff. He remained in his homeland, signing for Lyon, whilst David Silva was signed by Manchester City.
