Today’s Theme is Manga Monday! The manga chosen is Dragon Ball. I really shouldn’t have to explain this one. Akira Toriyama’s most successful series, loosely inspired by Journey to the West. The original Dragon Ball was a tale of adventure of a young Goku and Bulma as they search for the mystical, wish-granting Dragon Balls using Bulma’s trusty Dragon Radar. Since it focused on adventure rather than the now standard, fate of the world-defining fights, finding each dragon ball was an adventure in of itself, with them often being in weird, fantastical locations. Often breaking up the adventures, usually during the year-long period when the dragon balls are inactive, martial arts tournaments really shine in the original, with meticulously drawn hand-to-hand combat choreography. I would recommend anyone who enjoys a nice-paced adventure comedy to experience Dragon Ball from the very beginning. It really is a different experience from everything that followed once Dragon Ball Z began.
