Here's another letter world sent to me by a fan. It's called World V and it's pretty good, at least so far, as it's still in beta stage. Because of this, the levels are separated into 4 individual mini games that you can play in whichever order you wish, which solves the infamous problem of having no continues and having to go back to square 1 every time you lose all your lives. However, this also means that you don't get the satisfaction of beating a level, because you can select whichever you want to play right off the bat, so if you can't complete one, you can just skip ahead to the next one, which is non-rewarding and feels like cheating. This is still a prototype, so I'm expecting it to be made into a fully functional game. That doesn't mean that it shouldn't have continues, as the problem would persist ! As for the levels themselves, they were very enjoyable to play : no glitches (which is more than can be said for most fan worlds) and fair difficulty. There aren't as many enemies as there are tricky jumps, but I think that's how I like it best, because a high number of enemies makes the game feel unfair, while small platforms and tough jumps require skill rather than quick thinking, so you can take your time and plan everything ahead. The only level that failed to impress was, oddly enough, the last one : you just take a few steps to the right and you're already fighting Bowser. Not only that, but after giving him a few shots, Bowser flashes a few times then vanishes and never comes back, but even if he did, there is a flag (or bar, whatever) at the end of the room, like in all the regular levels that you can hit and finish the level anyway, even with Bowser still alive, which I think tries to replicate the axe at the end of the bridge in the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES, but it doesn't translate too well here because the corridor is tall and there's plenty of space to get around Bowser and run for the "axe", so the challenge is non-existent. It feels like it hasn't been finished, which is to be expected since it was the last level made so there was less time to polish it, so I'm going to let it slide this time, but needless to say it's the first thing that should be taken care of ! There are some small things to fix as well, like the opacity of some of the pipes and the omnipresent overly-loud soundtracks, but these are just details that don't affect playability, so I'm not going to classify them as flaws. With that being said, I can definitely approve this world and I'm expecting to see it made into a fully functional game very soon. Great job !
