Here's another fan world : "Hardcore World 3". Do you remember how hard the originals were ? Now imagine those combined and multiplied a couple of times - that's how hardcore this world is....pun intended. It's not bad as far as the overall quality is concerned. There are a few minor glitches, like going through some of the blocks and not being able to jump when you land on the platforms right above the surface of the water in level 3, but they don't affect playabilty too much once you figure them out and know how to avoid them. Now let's talk about the difficulty : all I can say is "MY GOD !" Who was this game intended for ? Clearly not average gamers who wanted a fair challenge ! If you call yourself a casual, run of the mill gamer, who just wants a game to pass the time away, just get the f**k out - you've already died ! After days of trying (not continuously of course), I eventually said "screw it" and gave up myself. I did make it to the last level, but once I died there, the thought of having to do all that insanity all over again made me sick, so I stopped. The biggest issue is, as always, the lack of continues, so no matter how far you've made it, once all your lives are gone, you get sent back to level 1, and let me tell you, they got really carried away with that first level : it's way too long and way too difficult. You got a swarm of lakitus, tough jumps on small platforms, firing plants and fuckin' koopa-troopas....you think that's enough ?! The human brain cannot pay attention to this many things at once ! There's only a single checkpoint half way through it, but making it there is not as easy as it sounds. Why make the first level so tough ? To prevent gamers from seeing the rest of the game ? To separate men from kids ? Either way, it's not OK (that rhymes). It took me, I think it's safe to say, hundreds of tries to finally get to the castle, but like I said, once I died there I had no calling to try again. If it's really that difficult to have a continue option, an alternative would be to have a 1-UP at the beginning of each level, so you can grab it whenever you die and restore the life you just lost. Well, believe it or not, they sort-of got the right idea with this in levels 1, 3 and 4, but it's still not ideal because the lives are not placed right at the beginning so you can die again before getting them. In level 1 it's right before the checkpoint, so you have to make it there first (which is insanely hard), in level 4 the 1-UP is hidden and you also have to make a pretty decent jump to get to it, and in level 3, it's not actually a 1-UP per-se : about half way through, there's a bridge of enemies with a shell waiting at its close end - kick the shell across the bridge and after it takes out 7 enemies in a row, you get a 1-UP (or possibly even more if some of the flying fish get in its way). Even after knowing about the extra life trick, once you get to the checkpoint in levels 3 and 4, you can no longer go back and restock when you die, so you're left with however many you had prior to getting there. The lives should be placed at the start of each level and also at each checkpoint so you can grab them without risking any more. It may sound like making the game too easy, but even so it would still be challenging, because think about it : what is the point of having to do the early stages again once you've made it past them ? You've proved that you have the skills to get through the level, so why do it again ? You want to progress and see the rest of the game, not get stuck on level 1 for one hour ! I'm actually a bit disappointed that I had to let this one go prematurely and accept defeat, but I got a ton of other requests lately and I have to allot an equal amount of time to each of them, otherwise it wouldn't be fair for the person who requested the game to wait so long for me to tend to it. Maybe one day I'll come back and retry all of these failed attempts just to please the fans and also take my revenge, but for now that's all I can take. Not a bad world, but holy fuck is it hardcore...pun intended again. Danny out !
