A playthrough of The Software Toolworks' 1994 edutainment game for PCs running Dos, Mario is Missing! CD-ROM Deluxe.

Who's ready for some Weegee?

The CD-ROM Deluxe edition of Mario is Missing! brings several upgrades over both the original 1993 floppy disk release and its Super Nintendo adaptation (   • Mario is Missing! (SNES) Playthrough ...  ).

The dialogue is now fully voiced, the landmark illustrations have been replaced by FMV clips and digitized photos, and there's more content. It combines the fifteen cities from the base game with the ten from the "City Disk" expansion, it adds new conversations and cutscenes (including some fun story moments with Mario), it replaces the nameless NPCs at the landmarks with Mario characters, and it introduces a super handy fast-travel system.

It has to be said that the writing and voice work is gold star stuff. Between the rampant use of stereotypes, Princess Toadstool's awkward sexy lady voice (is she trying to sound like Daphne from Dragon's Lair?), and the constant stream of cringe-worthy rhymes and puns, the game drew quite a few laughs out of me. I wasn't expecting to be so thoroughly entertained by this one, but I'm not complaining.

(A friendly warning to anyone interested in playing: the game will crash if you feed it too much RAM. Two megabytes is enough to run it smoothly. Four will cause problems.)
