A playthrough of Kyodai's 1989 action role-playing game for Dos PCs, Ancient Land of Ys.

Coming out four months after the Master System game (   • Ys: The Vanished Omens (Master System...  ), "Ancient Land of Ys" was the second version of Nihon Falcom's "Ys: The Vanished Omens" to be released in English.

The Apple IIgs version was released three months behind the Dos one, and the TurboGrafx-CD remake (   • Ys Book I & II (TurboGrafx-CD) Playth...  ) brought up the rear, finally arriving in North America in the spring of 1990.

As far as I can tell, this version (developed by Unlimited Software, an arm of Distinctive Software) is virtually identical to the original PC88 game. All of the NPCs, dungeon layouts, items, and plot events survived the leap intact, and the bump combat feels the same. The EGA graphics are slightly chunkier and the music plays through the internal PC speaker, but the Dos port delivers a solid way to experience Adol's Arick's first adventure in Esteria. Or at least, it would've back in 1989.
