This is a capture of me playing through the 150cc Egg Cup in Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U. I'm using my favorite character, Link, and earning a 3-star rating.

It has been nearly four years since Mario Kart 8 came out on the Wii U, but I figured I should post some Grand Prix footage since I've already done that with all of my other Mario Kart games (or at least the ones that I'm capable of recording).

Despite loving both Mario Kart DS and Wii, I was not a fan of Mario Kart 7 - at all. To me, Mario Kart 7 is the absolute worst game in the series and seriously broken. So when Nintendo announced Mario Kart 8, I was a little skeptical about its potential quality due to the flaws in the prior game. I was afraid of the influence that Mario Kart 7 might have on 8. I was also pissed that Nintendo had shut down the Wii's Wi-Fi Connection roughly 10 days before Mario Kart 8 released because this meant I couldn't continue playing Mario Kart Wii online if Mario Kart 8 ended up being disappointing.

However, I did eventually pick up Mario Kart 8 a couple days after its release date (I got sick on the release date and couldn't go to the store), and I immediately noticed an overall improvement from Mario Kart 7. Within just a few hours, Mario Kart 8 impressed me with some excellent track designs, tight handling, and decent music. I also liked that fact that the game continued to have Wii Wheel support.

Nonetheless, I did not feel that Mario Kart 8 was anywhere near as good as Mario Kart Wii. In an attempt to "rebalance" the game, Nintendo only allowed people to hold/use one item at a time, although the company attempted to compensate for this by increasing the size and hitbox of various items such as shells.

The result was total chaos. You could randomly throw a single green shell and the odds were in your favor that the shell would actually hit somebody. In addition, if you simply dragged an item behind you, you would be almost perfectly shielded from nearby racers. But unlike Mario Kart Wii, even if you got hit by an item through no fault of your own, the game wouldn't do much to help reclaim your prior position.

There was also a total weight imbalance that completely favored heavy-weight racers, not to mention the infamous bunny hopping exploit that I absolutely despised (I hated snaking in Mario Kart DS as well). Oh, and Nintendo completely screwed up the battle mode in an act of utter stupidity.

Even though this game had balancing problems, it ended up being my go-to online multiplayer game for the system (not that I had many choices), and I racked up a ton of time racing with friends. I also purchased the DLC, which is rare for me. So even though this game is near the bottom of my Mario Kart tier list, I still have some fond memories of it.

In this video I completed the Egg Cup in the 150cc class. This is a DLC cup that was not part of the standard game.

Recorded with the Elgato Game Capture HD60 and the Wii U's HDMI cable at native 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second.

I'm using a Wii Wheel.
