It feels great to be back creating covers from a variety of games again, and what a tune to start out with...! Sometime towards the end of December, my YouTube recommended videos sidebar became inundated with recommendations of these Mario Party DS Anti-Piracy videos - I'm sure many of you had a similar experience! I watched a few of them, and was left a bit unsettled by how it could be possible that something like this hadn't been discovered until now, and how the game designers were willing to put something in a game that could seriously scare young, impressionable kids. I did some further research and discovered that most of these Anti-Piracy videos were well-done fan creations, so kudos to the people that are making these creepypastas!

But then I listened to the music for the first time... and OH MY GOSH this song is so much more of a bop than it ever needed to be. I've been craving doing a cover that's really really out of left field compared to most stuff I upload to the channel, and this tune certainly fits the bill. Transcribing it was a really challenge (especially the part after the "drop") since it's such a dissonant and chromatic tune. That being said, this tune is a great example of how a solid groove can hold a tune together that is otherwise very dissonant and jarring!

I have to talk about the new gear that I'm using in this video, because I have made a LOT of upgrades since finishing the Year of Sinnoh. You'll probably notice first and foremost that I'm using a live drum kit in this one! I've been using MIDI drums for the majority of the past 8 years that I've been YouTube, and I decided to end this streak in 2021. Drums are very loud, but I'm currently living at home with my parents, and they're kind enough to let me set this up in their basement, haha. Recording and mixing live drums is a huge challenge (there are about 9 mics on this kit in this video!), but it's so much more fun and satisfying to play compared to an e-kit or MIDI drums. Another elephant in the room is the new grand piano! I've dreamed of owning a grand piano since I was a kid learning to play piano on an upright, so my parents and I finally got together and invested in a grand piano. It's a Yamaha C5 from the 80's, bought used, and it sounds fantastic! I am still experimenting with mic techniques for it and how to mix it, but having a grand piano is SO nice. I can't wait to use it in more exposed contexts - this video doesn't quite do it justice, haha!

Also, let me know what you guys think about the new intro format I'm trying out! I'm expanding on the arrangement preview timeline I added a few months ago by incorporating a few more visual elements. The goal is to succinctly tell viewers what they can expect as the video progresses, without actually spoiling what happens / what the music sounds like.

Thanks for watching everyone, and I'm looking forward to bringing more great stuff to you in 2021!
