I've been trying to pinpoint when I first discovered Mars Attacks. I know I was well aware of its reputation prior to the movie, but I'm not sure how that came to be.
Exposure via pop culture through scifi and collectible conventions and memorabilia? Perhaps.
It's pretty impressive how gnarly these cards are considering when they were released. You've got people getting disintegrated and melted all over the place, giant bugs gnawing people apart, monstrous aliens kidnapping damsels for unfathomable reasons, and then a massive invasion where mankind storms the red planet and butchers the population in return. It's a wild ride.
I love the fact that not only does this book have the original run of cards, but it has a lot of the sequel sets, as well as some interesting early sketch work.
The only thing I'm sad isn't in this is a subsection on Dinosaurs Attack. It was just as bad, if not outright worse in kicking up the craziness, and was something I definitely remember from my childhood. The design of that card set was absolutely based on Mars Attacks in almost every way too.
Fun stuff if you like your retro scifi on the wild and unruly side! Plus you have to love that wax- like cover made to look and feel like an old trading card wrapper.
