When enough of you keep asking me the same questions I try to listen...so here we go; Let's discuss MARS FPGA and how it compares to MiSTer FPGA. What do I know about the MARS FPGA project? Well...about as much as you do! But as someone who talks about retro gaming and MiSTer FPGA weekly and as an advocate for FPGA gaming in general...apparently you want to know what I think! So what do I think? I think Kuato is pretty cool!
But apparently MARS FPGA is getting a redesign with two FPGA chips in what seems to be a similar manner to Analogue Pocket and Analogue FPGA, it has a new shell design and a cart port that seems to be teasing a Nintendo 64 FPGA core, has teased more arcade games including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in time and more. Plus some weirdness with MiSTer FPGA repro's.
and lately I have been getting asked a lot about MARS FPGA as to whether or not MARS FPGA was cancelled or if MARS FPGA is dead...so let's take a look at the current status of the presumptive MiSTer FPGA competitor that isn't Analogue Pocket! Because MARS FPGA has now teased a Mortal Kombat II FPGA core and a 3DO FPGA core. Plus a Dreamcast FPGA core, an Atari Jaguar FPGA core...and basically everything else too
You asked...now I answer. What is MARS FPGA? Is a MARS FPGA Dreamcast Core happening? Will you be playing Dead or Alive 2 on a MARS FPGA NAOMI Core? Is there going to be a MARS Capcom CPS III Core? a MARS IGS PGM Core? Should I buy a MARS FPGA board? Does MARS FPGA have JAMMA? (ok that's easy. They said it does lol)
The answer is...in the video lol. But we will discuss what has been announced for MARS FPGA, talk about what they have stated in regards to MiSTer FPGA core ports to MARS (as those are open source FPGA projects) and the timing...and just kind of look at a LOT of real hardware because it's always fun to show stuff off!
But there are a ton of Dreamcast hidden gems, NAOMI hidden gems, IGS PGM hidden gems...and more! So playing them in FPGA one day in the future could totally be fun!
