In a recent alpha test, a datamine of Marvel Rivals has seemingly uncovered plans to bring the hero shooter to consoles like Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. This closed technical test provided fans with their first glimpse of NetEase's Marvel-specific take on games like Overwatch. Players got to explore various modes and maps, and try out characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man.
While some players were busy testing the game, others delved into the game files, resulting in a massive leak. This leak revealed 20 new characters and five unrevealed maps, expanding the roster to 39 characters. However, it's unlikely that all these characters will be available at launch, considering the time it took for similar games like Overwatch 2 to reach a roster of that size. Dataminers also uncovered information about the game's release and potential platforms.
During the alpha test, dataminers found code mentioning Microsoft and PlayStation Store for in-game purchases, which aligns with the online nature of Marvel Rivals.
While the game's reveal initially mentioned PC only, NetEase is exploring releases on other platforms. Dataminer Miller Ross, known for confirming details on games like Marvel's Avengers and Suicide Squad, added that crossplay infrastructure is present in the code, hinting at an imminent announcement, possibly during events like Summer Games Fest in June.
While fans await confirmation of additional platforms, the game faced criticism during the Closed Alpha. A "non-disparagement" clause in the contract prohibited negative comments about the game. After backlash, Marvel Rivals issued an apology and promised to revise the contract to encourage constructive criticism for game improvement.
